All Saint's Day

Today is All Saint's Day, a legal non-working holiday here in the Philippines. This is a time to remember the faithful departed loved ones. People flock to cemeteries and memorial parks to offer prayers, candles and flowers to the dead.

I just hope that people will not forget the true meaning of this day... This is not a day for picnicking, gambling, drinking, trouble making, family reunions etc, which I think many are doing.

Remember we will surely not want our relatives and friends partying over our graves when the time comes... So let us give due respect for the departed. May they all rest in peace!

What other countries celebrate November 1 by going to the cemetery?
I know they do not do this in the US, Canada, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.
Is this a Spanish thing? Definitely it is not an American or Chinese thing?

Spain, Portugal and Mexico make offerings for the dead on this day. Other countries like France, Italy, Slovakia, Germany, Lithuania light candles and visit the grves of their loved ones. In the Philippines we also offer prayers, light candles and lay flowers although the atmosphere is more festive...which sad to say is not appropriate for the occassion.
